| Genlisea violacea (St.Hil.) - Brazil Comments: Fernando Rivadavia comments on 2 July 04 at http://www.cpukforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5002 “G. violacea "giant" and G. sp."giant violacea" are the same plant, a possible new species which is larger than regular G. violacea and is perennial. G. violacea is USUALLY an annual in the wild, but in cultivation it is USUALLY a perennial. In the wild G. violacea does not occur as a semi-aquatic, it grows on moss-covered rocks (or in cracks in the rocks) and in open humid sandy soil among sparse grasses. The "giant" is not relative to the flower, but to the scapes, traps, and leaves. The flowers are about the same size, but with longer spurs in the giant form. There are a few morphological differences other than overall size, especially the flower shape. P.S. The "TYPE" form of G. violacea is NOT from the Serra do Caraça, but from the Serra de Ibitipoca, in SE Minas Gerais state near the border with Rio de Janeiro state. The cool thing about this species is that it is very variable and each mountain seems to have its own unique form.
